"You've Got the Power"
The first moment you said, "I didn't do this to me, someone else did. I didn't cause this bad feeling; others made me feel this way" is the moment you gave up your power to be formative in the events of your life. The ability didn't go away, however … it is right there in front of you. Take it back.
For those of you whose first thought is, "What about children? They don't decide what happens to them." I'll warrant your logic in that. However, you are not a child. The degree of your ability to attain your goals in life depends entirely upon the degree that you are willing to take responsibility for the events in it.
As well, for anything to exist in your life, it needs to be created.
This includes your health -- good or bad.
This includes your ability -- good or bad.
This includes your emotional reactions -- good or bad.
This includes your relationships -- good or bad.
We create the bad stuff as much as the good.
The truth is, many people don't take responsibility for what happens in their lives -- oftentimes believing that the choices they make in life are thrust upon them by "others" or immutable conditions. They forget that they are the ultimate cause in the forces of their own lives. When you fault others for your present circumstances, you give others power over that part of your life.
Sure, we get strapped down by mortgages, kids, medical liabilities and distressed family members. But the day that we walk out the door and say, "I, me, and only me, am going to do something about this today!" is the day where the circumstances of our lives can actually change. The ability is right there in front of you. Take it back.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful Robin Griggs Wood! Not sure if I agree on every detail though... ;-) How do we chose health if we're not well? How do we react good on something that for example instantly makes us feel traumatized, in shock? Can we really talk about choices in every situation?
ReplyDeletebeautyfull
ReplyDeleteNice shot. As to the message in the post (with which I agree 100%, and it is part of my "day job" to deal with those concepts), the term for all that is not so much responsibility as accountability. It's more than just a sublte difference, but that's what it is.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Thanks for sharing with HQSP Landscape
ReplyDeleteKiller pic! Awesome message :)
ReplyDeleteVery nice capture and wonderful words. We all make choices, some good some bad, and we reap the consequences. However, there are many who do not take ownership and blame others or society.

ReplyDeleteMiguel Almeida -- I use the word "responsibility" here in a more basic way, as "response ability" ... but "accountability" is a good addition!

Magical!
ReplyDeleteRobin Griggs Wood I understood that. And that's the origin of the word anyway (responsibility = response ability), as far as I am aware.
ReplyDeleteMy point (and experience) is that if people are not held accountable for the results of their actions (which in turn are consequences of their thoughts and belief systems), they seldom realise that they have the personal power to respond to situations in different ways... and from there choose the most appropriate. Hence the need of accountability to "enforce" responsibility ;)
fantastic!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful words and powerful image. I think that the world gives us blessings and challenges. The winner chooses the positive choice of overcoming those challenges and become a winner in the end, Thank you so much for this reminder.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mikko Tyllinen and Iva Pas dwa!
ReplyDeleteMiguel Almeida -- oh, I completely understood where you were coming from on that. It's a good point. Though, for "taking responsibility for one's life" to work at its best, we need to get past the idea of responsibility as "blame"––something that people carry too much of from their history, which can be rather depressive, or oppressive. I see accountability, in its most workable concept, as "account ability", to be able to see the circumstances of one's life as something one can take an account of with honesty and, with that same honesty, be able to say, "yes, I did that ... and here is what I am going to do about it." It leaves out the "enforce" aspect of it, and the hindering self-abasement that can engender, and forwards action based on its appealing nature of "my life can work better this way." That way, a big stick is never needed in the activity ... ;o)
ReplyDeleteMylah Nazario -- wonderful comment, dear ... and thank you for he kind words ... :o)
ReplyDeleteRobin Griggs Wood I agree with your point in general (more than just general, I broadly agree). The one caveat that I see slightly differently (and hence my term "enforcing") relates to cultural identity differences whereby different cultures see/accept differently such terms and concepts. In Latin countries (and although I'm Portuguese, I am the least latin person in the country!), a lack of accountability means that people easily eschew their duties, social and individual, and an abuse ethic is the de facto ethos. There is no meritocracy in place, and without that, I do not see responsibility working properly. In these cases, I find the "need" to enforce accountability first, so that people are "led" to be responsible by that. When the former is not in place, as mentioned, a culture of abuse sets in, where the many sit down and wait for the few to do... and then for rights to be removed from the latter and given to the former.
ReplyDeleteGreat conversation, Miguel Almeida .. :o)
ReplyDeleteI do see your point and agree with much of it. Though, isn't that a bit like "prisons reform criminals"? ( ... which, in my viewpoint isn't a fact.) Of course, you are right––my basic premise has its flaws in extensive application, in that many are not up to the level of being genuinely responsible (nor accountable) for their own actions. But I'm also not fond of edicts predicated on the lowest common denominator––which is how we become circumscribed by laws that end up being oppressive to the lawful.
Hmm, that's not the intention of my point, Robin Griggs Wood. I also agree that prisons do not reform criminals. It's more an issue of prevention rather than reform, in my view. Working upstream from the problems to ensure they don't get to flourish. Which would mean: education. Both at basic level (at school, for the kids), and as well for adults (well... adult education). The latter is best done inside organizations, pedagogically, via appropriate leadership... which starts with leading by example. Bottom line: we need to do "what is right", and in that way positively influence others with our example. Which closes the circle and goes back to the message on your post ;)
ReplyDeleteMiguel Almeida -- :oD
ReplyDelete... nice windup ... ;o))
