Wallpaper, WALLPAPER!
The other day, I found one of my paintings (http://goo.gl/3STnp) strewn around the Web on "free wallpaper" sites. They had gotten it off "CGSociety" (notorious for having works stolen from), cropped my signature off the bottom and ran it through a pixel bending program, stripping my copyright and generally uglifying it. Some even had the audacity to plop their copyright logo over mine.
Not that this is anything new.
What did I do?
I was reminded on something a girlfriend, one of the great teachers in my own life, said to me one day, "When you make something, give it away … then you'll just have to make more."
When you start to think of the works that you do as too important or significant you start to lose objectivity––the one thing you need for honing skills.
Make something, give it away, throw it away, burn it or just do it again.
Make it unimportant and you lose the stress and pressure -- those are the top two creativity killers.
On that note, I made something for all of you. This is in thanks to Google+ for the great network they have created and for all their support and to all of you for adding me to your circles and the support you offer me.
Here is the download link (for your personal use, please. Spread it over wallpaper sites for your own profit and you will get the worst karma … ;o))

Great colors and perspective of the hills.
ReplyDeletewonderful,brilliant colors.
ReplyDeleteI am a firm believer in whatever you give away will be given back to you with interest. It's a hard lesson, but a valuable one. Thanks for "giving away" your wonderful work, Robin!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous and stunning!! Beautiful! Thanks for sharing with the #LandscapePhotography theme!! I'm sharing this to the Landscape Photography page!! Check out all the great photos there including yours!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about the pirates!! I moderate the Landscape Photography Community and spend 1/2 my time admiring all the great images there and commenting on them. I spend my other 1/2 time finding and banning the pirates!!
beautifull
ReplyDeleteThank you Robin Griggs Wood, my desktop background is much happier now ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat photo and work! Robin Griggs Wood

George Farmer -- thank you for the kind comment.
ReplyDeleteDorma Wiggin -- thank you ... :o)
ReplyDeleteCarl Pettypiece -- that's a good way of looking at it ... and thank you for the kind words!
ReplyDeleteThis just brings a big smile to my face, especially on this rainy day - gorgeous!! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's one thing to inadvertently "borrow" or "share" your photo, but to go through the effort of removing your copyright and stripping your watermark? *shakes head* It'd make me so angry, but I suppose the effort in fighting it would not be worth it :-/ I sure hope Karma kicks them in the butt! xoxo
Margaret Tompkins -- thank you, dear! I am sorry that you have to waste so much of your valuable time doing that. Joel Tjintjelaar had decided to close his very popular communities down for that reason, but he's talking it over with the folks at Google+, so maybe there will be some changes soon (fingers crossed!)
ReplyDeleteRahman Maulana -- thank you
ReplyDeleteMichael V Kelly -- I'm honored that you would want to look at it longer then the 3 seconds of it zipping past your stream, so thank you! ... ;o)
ReplyDeleteRobert SKREINER -- thank you, my friend!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome, dear Robin Griggs Wood
ReplyDeleteRobin Griggs Wood Thank you!! And Take a look at this Gif LOL http://www.whattheduck.net/sites/default/files/WTD1368.gif
ReplyDeleteMaki Silberberg -- it did; it made me angry for all of three minutes, and then my girlfriend's words echoed in my head. I am still working towards becoming the type of artist that I aspire to, where my works could be identified as coming from no one else ... I'm still learning, too, you know ... ;o) ... so this makes me work harder is all. Thank you for the kind words, dear!
ReplyDeleteSheila B. DuBois -- hahaha!
ReplyDeleteThis is nature in action. Nice picture and also good for wallpaper.
ReplyDeleteOh this looks wonderful as my Desktop.... Your a wonder! Gracias my Friend!
ReplyDeleteFola Eniola -- :o)
ReplyDeleteSheila B. DuBois -- aw, that's sweet of you to say ... thank you!
ReplyDeletevery beautiful dear Robin Griggs Wood , thanks for sharing with Breakfast Club
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing scene Robin Griggs Wood. I would love to share this image over on Poppy Pics #poppypics
ReplyDeleteHow about: "When you make something, give it away, under certain conditions like a CC license, and when corporations abuse it, sue their pants off"? ;)
ReplyDeleteRobin Griggs Wood thanks so much Robin!! It's important to fight the pirates on G+!! That's great news that some changes are coming!! I'm glad that G+ will remove accounts when an owner of a stolen image reports it. I wish that would happen all over the internet.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous hillside!
ReplyDeleteRobin Griggs Wood...EPIC picture! It's so wonderfully Springy (as I look outside at fog and rain and barren trees still). So bright and cheery! happy sigh
ReplyDelete(by the way, I just sent you a private message....I'm sure you get a bazillion notifications so wanted to let you know. :D)
Robin Griggs Wood p.s. .... ok but about your own hard work on each little or great image.... why someone have to take credit and money, instead of you?
ReplyDeleteUgo Cei I agree :)
An awesome scene. Thank you for sharing it with The Magic of Light
ReplyDeleteGemma Costa -- thank you so much, dear! And I know what you mena ... :o)
ReplyDeleteRosie Nixon - thank you very much, and for the share, dear!
ReplyDeleteUgo Cei -- heheh ... ;o)
ReplyDeleteShelly Gunderson -- thank you, dear!
ReplyDeleteChristin McLeod -- thank you so much, dear! (I found your message ... thank you for letting me know here––that's a good way to do it!)
ReplyDeleteRay Bilcliff -- thank you so much, my friend!
ReplyDeleteJames Petruzzi -- thank you for your kind comment. Yes, they can't steal my ability to produce as much as I want ... ;o). I can make my own wallpaper site! ... heehee! And you're right, that cannot take what is truly important to me. Great comment.
ReplyDeleteGlen McBride -- :o)
ReplyDeleteWow!
ReplyDeleteSo that`s what they call a mood elevator!
A beautiful picture.
Larry S -- :oD ... thank you!
ReplyDeletePaul Paradis -- merci ... :o)
ReplyDeleteAn amazing image but, to me, a more amazing attitude when faced with a blatant thieving b@!&*%rd! I would just like to punch 'em ;)
ReplyDeleteFantastic inspiration.
Wayne Fenton -- so that means I can send you, if there's a "next time"? .... ;oD ... thank you for the kind words (and in advance for all the punching I'm gonna have you do ... hahaha!)
ReplyDeleteThis is simply BREATHTAKING ! Thank you so much dear Robin!
ReplyDeleteConcerning the abillity to give away, very wise words from your teacher! If I create a picture for somebody else I can give it away, if I do it for me ( and that's what I mostly do) it's not easy to give away..... In the digital world we can at least reproduce as often we want, but a painted picture is unique!
Fantastic work Robin Griggs Wood, an amazing contributoin to the #LandscapePhotography theme!
ReplyDeleteUrsula Broicher -- thank you for your wonderful comment, dear! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteDragon Rhee -- :o)
ReplyDeleteMichael Blyde -- thank you very much!

ReplyDeleteThank you for the kind comment, Bjarte Wergedahl ... :o)
ReplyDeleteSuch a great attitude about things. Always an inspiration, Robin.
ReplyDeleteSimos Xenakis -- thank you so much, my friend ... :o)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe people, you have all the reasons to be pissed off. Your on the top for your art.I only hope you dont go away.I want to thank you for taking the time, which you didn't have to, to teach me how to take a top of the line photo. KARMA WILL FIND ITS SELF.What you do will teach us what to do .I was hoping i would never see this.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely, Robin Griggs Wood
ReplyDelete...and it's now my wallpaper while it's brown and bleak outside... (I sometimes use snow wallpaper in July!).
I'm still curious about what sort of copyright registration workflow you (and other 'copied' photographers) use...
Aw, I'm so glad that it's making a cheery desktop for you, Dave Bell!
ReplyDeleteIn truth, I'm still not famous enough (or good enough?) to have a ton of my work stolen ... and when the day happens (fingers crossed, so I can't type well ... ;oD,) I'll probably be onto bigger and better things and register anything I think is important enough ... at least, that is what I am working towards. I'm still in the growing process myself.
Robin Griggs Wood to be honest I use for my desktop too :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome, Sheila B. DuBois!
ReplyDeleteHappy new year to you!!
Oh, Robin Griggs Wood, I think you're selling yourself short. You don't have 1.5 million circlers by accident! What you gain is the ability to sue for statutory damages rather than just actual damages (ie. it's a lot easier to win, because you don't have to prove how much money you lost due to the improper use). Just seems like worthwhile insurance... There just seem to be a couple complications for those who post their work publicly frequently...appears that you can only register groups of published work that were taken over a period of several months by physically sending something like a DVD with jpg files.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it was an accident, Dave Bell ... ;oD! Yes, it's the complexities of the process that have balked me. The one thing I know for certain––and it follows along with the concept of my post––is that I can always make more ... they can't "steal" my ability ... ;o))
ReplyDeleteA very healthy attitude. I hope some of that will rub off on me along with some of the creativity!
ReplyDeleteDave Bell, I know you were in my BTS notify circle; did you get a chance to read my "Care and Feeding of your Muse" articles? It's everything I use myself to foster my own creativity. As well, I popped you into the circle I'm keeping for a "notify" when I get my GMAPP4 going again (I'm hoping to be able to do another in the new year) ... no obligation on that, though ... ;o))
ReplyDeleterobingriggswoodart <–– articles link
Oh, I've definitely read "Care and Feeding" (multiple times).
ReplyDeleteTime to relax with a mug of hot chocolate and read through again...
Thanks so much for keeping me in the loop :-)
